Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is used when sperm cannot fertilise an egg on their own. Under a high-powered microscope, the embryologist selects one sperm and injects it directly into the egg's cytoplasm. Everything before and after is the same as a standard IVF cycle.
ICSI transformed the outlook for severe male factor infertility. It is also used after unexpected total fertilisation failure in a previous IVF cycle, and when only a small number of eggs are collected and every one matters.
