What embryo & sperm freezing involves
Freezing turns one retrieval into several chances. Good-quality blastocysts that are not transferred are vitrified and can be used months or years later without repeating stimulation, which is both cheaper and far easier on the body.
Sperm freezing is used before cancer treatment, before vasectomy, where the male partner cannot be present on the day of retrieval, and where counts fluctuate badly enough that a backup sample is wise.

Case study: One retrieval, three chances

What she came in with
Severe oligospermia requiring ICSI. She was thirty-two with a good ovarian reserve, and the financial question was real: they could afford one stimulation cycle, not three.
What the workup showed
Sixteen eggs collected, thirteen mature, ten fertilised with ICSI and six reaching good-quality blastocyst. A backup sperm sample had been frozen in advance, which mattered when the fresh sample on the day was unusually poor.
What we did
One blastocyst transferred fresh; five vitrified. The fresh transfer did not implant. Two subsequent frozen transfers followed over the next fourteen months, each costing a fraction of a full cycle.
Outcome
The second frozen transfer produced an ongoing pregnancy. Three blastocysts remain for a future sibling.

One egg collection funded three attempts. Freezing turns a single expensive cycle into several affordable ones, and the frozen transfers are easier on the body than the stimulation was.
