What egg freezing involves
Egg freezing separates the biological timeline from the personal one. The stimulation and retrieval are identical to an IVF cycle; instead of being fertilised, the mature eggs are vitrified and stored. When you decide to use them, they are warmed, fertilised by ICSI and transferred.
The single factor that determines how well this works is the age at which the eggs are frozen. Eggs frozen at 30 behave like eggs from a 30-year-old, whatever your age at the time of use. That is the entire point of doing it early.
Who this is for

Step by step
Counselling and reserve testing
AMH and antral follicle count give a realistic estimate of how many eggs one cycle will yield.
Stimulation
Ten to twelve days of injections with scan monitoring, as in IVF.
Retrieval
A short day procedure under anaesthesia.
Vitrification and storage
Mature eggs are flash-frozen and stored. You are told exactly how many were frozen.

Questions about egg freezing
How many eggs should I freeze?
For a reasonable chance of one live birth, around 15–20 mature eggs frozen before 35 is a sensible target. Above 38 the number needed rises steeply. Many women need two collection cycles.
Until what age is egg freezing worthwhile?
It works best before 35 and is still reasonable to 37 or 38. Beyond 40 the yield and quality make it a much weaker proposition, and we will say so.
Does freezing eggs harm my future fertility?
No. The cycle recruits eggs that your body would have discarded that month anyway.
