What diagnostic & operative laparoscopy involves
Laparoscopy puts a camera into the abdomen through a small incision, giving a direct view of the uterus, tubes and ovaries. It is both the most accurate way to diagnose endometriosis and adhesions, and the means of treating them in the same sitting.
Compared with open surgery it means less pain, a shorter stay, fewer adhesions afterwards and a return to normal activity within about a week.
Who this is for

Step by step
Pre-operative assessment
Bloods, anaesthetic review and a clear explanation of what will and will not be done.
Procedure
Usually 30 to 90 minutes under general anaesthesia through two or three keyhole incisions.
Treatment in the same sitting
Adhesions divided, endometriosis excised, cysts removed, tubal patency checked with dye.
Recovery
Home the same or next day; normal activity in five to seven days.

Whatever the outcome of diagnostic & operative laparoscopy, you leave each stage with the findings written down — what was done, what was found, what it means, and what the options are from here. Reports are issued the same day wherever the laboratory allows it.

Questions about diagnostic & operative laparoscopy
Is laparoscopy necessary before IVF?
Not routinely. It is indicated where there is suspected endometriosis, a hydrosalpinx, or unexplained infertility after a normal workup.
How soon can I try to conceive afterwards?
Usually from the next cycle after a diagnostic procedure. After extensive surgery we may advise waiting two to three months.
